We are two old school craftsmen who believe that hand-made work from a person with passion & skill is more important now than ever before.

With expertise working in any kind of metal, and any kind of fiber–artisans Denise Carbonell and Derek Dominy opened their first shop in the mid 1990’s—first on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and then moving to Red Hook’s Van Brunt Street in 2008.

We are each self-taught in our discipline and try to encourage people to learn skills that will help them to become more self-sufficient, such as making their own clothing, jewelry, tools and furniture.

The hundreds of unique items at Metal and Thread include one of a kind hand crafted jewelry,a collection of vintage copper jewelry designed by K. Denning in the 1950’s,brass,bronze and copper chainmaille, custom made steel shelving from recycled schoolyard gates, original oil paintings by Walter Fields, vintage musical instruments…from Dobros to Banjoleles, and unique hand tools from the 1930’s.

We try to keep the experience in our shop real and human. We often have a fire in the going when it’s chilly…and we welcome anyone with a good story to sit down and enjoy everything we have to offer.
